8 - The Exeter Hotel

Located on trendy Rundle Street is the Exeter Hotel, first established in 1851. The original hotel was granted its first license on 13 March 1851 in the name of Robert Bedford. In 1888, the original building was demolished and the hotel present today was built.

The hotel was styled in Victorian Italianate. In 1929, green glass tiles were added to the exterior, and since has often been renovated. Originally the hotel serviced the markets that were at its rear and would open early to suit the market workers. Now it is an integral part of Adelaide’s Rundle street night life, as well as a place to relax during the day. The hotel remains an icon in the street.

Long rumoured to be haunted, phenomena in this hotel has often been blamed on a former owner of the hotel, Mrs. Joseph, who it is said, was stabbed to death by her frustrated lover, Frank. As a result he served eight years in the Adelaide Gaol before being deported to England. This story, told as the back story to the haunting, is unsubstantiated, and could well have happened before Adelaide’s newspapers were in print, and any historical record may therefore not be available.

Phenomena such as the sound of disembodied shuffling feet or loud footsteps in the upstairs hallway are often attributed to Mrs. Joseph. Why she chooses to haunt the hotel is a mystery.
