Cody described it as a 3D image that uses laser light and doesn’t need any special glasses to be seen. “I made a mini-hologram at summer camp last year. It’s awesome. I’ll show you how later.”

The medium began talking in a high-pitched voice. Cody put her ear to the hole to hear the words more clearly.

“Edward? Edward Burnett? Is that you?” the medium asked.

Cody peeked through the hole and saw the medium’s head still tilted back, her eyes closed. She listened again and heard the old man gasp.

“Con-Constance? Is it really you, darling?”

“Yes, it’s me, Edward,” the medium said in a different voice, as if channeling a spirit. “I miss you so, dear husband.”

Cody peeked again to see what was happening. In the dim light of the candles, she thought she saw the man’s eyes tear up as he gazed up at the hovering image of what was supposed to be his dead wife. She listened again.

“I-I miss you, too, darling. I’m so sorry you’re gone. I should have been there for your last minutes.” Cody stole another glance inside the room and saw the old man shake his head.

“It’s all right, my dearest. You’re here with me now, thanks to Madame Grizelda,” the voice said as the holographic image floated eerily over the table.

Cody was impressed. The “ghost” almost looked real—except Cody knew better. So how had this medium done it? Was the old man really fooled by this fake? Cody felt a tinge of sadness for him.

“Edward, as I mentioned,” the voice continued. “I want you to donate as much money as you can to Psychic Friends. They have done so much for us in such a short time. Madame Grizelda will handle the money for you. I hope you brought the cash.”

“I did, my darling,” Edward said. “I’ll give it all to her. After all, she brought us back together.”

Cody blinked. What was going on here? Was the medium trying to convince this old man that he was actually talking to his deceased wife? Did they expect him to give her a bunch of money? Whoa. This was like something out of Houdini’s reports about fake séances and money scams! She wondered if the people who owned the Winchester Mystery House knew about this.

She had an idea. A hologram that size had to be projected from somewhere else. An adjoining room? One that had been locked up due to earthquake damage? If so, a person who knew the house well could sneak in, use a couple of the blocked-off rooms, and no one would even think to look there.

Cody stepped back and surveyed the room they were in. There had to be another one connected to the hidden Séance Room where someone else—an accomplice?—could rig the hologram and other tricks the medium might use. She tiptoed over to another wall and searched for a hole in the wood slat but found nothing. She moved to another wall—and spotted a knot in one of the wood panels.

Was there a secret door hidden in the decaying wall?

“What are you doing?” Luke whispered to her.
