“Honestly,” I said. “The sooner you learn how to do this for yourself, the easier things will be.”

“Well I know,” Jason said. “But then I wouldn’t get to see you.”

I rolled my eyes as I put the finishing touches on his zombie makeup.

“Did you seriously just hit on me?” I asked.

“Would that be a problem if I did?” he asked.

“Come on,” I said.

“What?” he asked.

“Come on,” I said.

“Oh, is it because of Chloe?” he asked.

Well now my curiosity was piqued. I hadn’t realized other people were saying things about us, but I was definitely interested in hearing what the scuttlebutt was.

“What are you talking about?” I asked, trying my best to sound innocent.

“Come on,” he said. “I’ve seen the way the two of you look at each other, and don’t tell me all the stuff we’ve heard about the two of you getting it on down here isn’t true.”

“The two of us getting it on down here?” I asked, arching an eyebrow.

I was very curious about exactly what the hell he was talking on about. As far as I knew, there weren’t any rumors going on about the two of us. But it would appear that it wasn’t that there were no rumors so much as I was out of the loop.

“People have been saying things,” he said. “The two of you are down here alone doing your work all the time. People have seen the two of you pulling apart when they come through the door. Stuff like that.”

I grinned. It’s not like I had anything to be ashamed of or to hide.

Sure there was a time, a couple of years ago, when I would’ve been horrified at the thought of somebody figuring out that I was into a girl, but that was a long time ago. Or at least it felt like a long time ago. I knew a couple of years wasn’t much in the grand scheme of things, but it felt like a lot.

“What’s going on between me and Chloe is no one’s business but our own,” I said, shaking my head. “I hadn’t even realized people had some idea.”

“So what is going on between the two of you?” Jason asked. “Like is it serious?”

“If you’re asking if you have a chance, the answer is no,” I said. “Sorry. Just not interested.”

He only deflated a little. I figured that was good. Maybe that meant he was going to take the news well.

I’d had some guys who seemed to be of the opinion that the only thing I needed was their magical dick to decide I wasn’t into the ladies anymore. Which totally wasn’t happening, but that didn’t stop assholes from being assholes.

“Well I should probably be going,” Jason finally said. “But it was good talking to you, Hannah.”

“Good talking to you too, Jason,” I said. “Give them hell, and say hi to Connor if you see him out in the maze.”

“Will do!” he said, sketching a quick salute.

And with that he disappeared into the basement under the haunted house.
