Chapter 9
Jackson arrived back at his auntâs house, as he pulled up he saw Delilahâs car parked, and her sitting on the front steps. She had on the same clothes he saw her in the day before, and there was something hollow about her appearance. She look at him as he got out, her eyes sunken and dejected.
âDelilah, what are you doing here?â He asked. âI thought you were at school.â
She looked up at him, her lips were dry and there were was a dry ash on her cheeks. She had been crying. âI came by, but your aunt said you were out, so I waited for you.â She said, her voice low and raspy.
âWhat happened? Whatâs wrong?â He took a seat next to her, putting his arm around her shoulder.
âEverything.â She placed her head on his shoulder. âI just want to rest. Iâm so tired.â She said.
Burdened by his guilt, a weight settled on his heart. He held her closer. âDelilah, I want to talk to you about something.â
âActually, me too.â She said. âThatâs why Iâm here. Can we go inside?â
âYeah, come on.â They stood and headed into the house and up to Jacksonâs room.
She sat down at the edge of the bed, her hands resting in her lap. He took a seat next to her.
âCan I ask you something?â She said.
âYeah?â
âWhat do you know about your father?â
His eyebrows drew together. âUh, well, I know he died before I was born. My step dad never talked about what he did for a living. Just that he invested in a bunch of stock and left me a trust fund. Why do you ask?â
Delilah twiddled her thumbs, taking in a breath. âThereâs something I need to show you.â She reached into her pocket, and took out the photo of her and Silas, handing it to him.
He looked at it. âThatâs my father. Why do you have a picture of my father and...â He squinted, âSome baby.â
Delilah looked up into his eyes, letting out a huff of discomfort. âJackson, that baby is me. Iâm your sister.â
There was a moment of silence, so uncomfortable that Delilahâs stomach heaved at the memory of her trying to kiss him.
Jackson bit his bottom lip, staring blankly at the wall ahead. Suddenly, every encounter, every feeling he had for her up to now came full circle. It all made sense now. Those feelings they shared werenât romantic. They were blood. He took in and let out a deep breath. His elbows rested on his thighs, he turned to Delilah.
âWe almost kissed.â He said.
Delilahâs eyes grew wide, embarrassment lacerating her insides. Then they both burst into laughter, turning a moment of humiliation and shock into a moment of hilarity.
âOh God, why are we laughing?â Delilah said, her fingers pressed against her eyes. âThere is nothing funny about any of this.â
âI honestly donât know. This is a lot.â He said, trying to suppress his laughter. âHow do you even know if this is really true? Itâs just a photo.â
âMy mother told me to stay away from you after you left yesterday.
