CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
RICHTER
â¦â¦â¦â¦
I knew this could happen. And as the leader, I need to take the initiative. I lock eyes with Cal, and he gives me a slight nod.
I stand straight, and all eyes converge on me. âDora being there was an accident. These things happen. You know every operation you go on carries unforeseen risks. Right?â
I look at each and every one of them, forcing them to meet my eyes.
âIt was necessary to tell Viktor that Dora knew where Jozdani was. Thatâs why he didnât kill her. If Dora had been killedââ I swallow, my mouth suddenly dry, as a horrible image of Dora lying in a pool of blood flashes across my mind. I speak quickly. âIf that happened, we would have the death of a civilian on our hands. There would be a federal investigation, we would get heat, and to cap it all off, we would have killed one of our own citizens. That doesnât help anyone.â
Ken and Brandon have the hint of a smile on their lips, but there is also something else. I know what they think. Hell, Brandon saw me hugging her when they all but broke into my house. Even these battle-hardened men can take a hint of whatâs happening between me and Dora.
But what bothers me is their faint disapproval. None of them look like they want to accept this.
I agree itâs awkward. We never have a civilian in our midst. But we have to make the best of a bad situation.
The biggest problem, however, is that my own feelings are a mess. I canât be emotional in this, for Doraâs safety if nothing else. I know Iâll protect her to kingdom come. Take a bullet to the head, chest, anywhere to save her life. But Iâm in deep with her. When sheâs with me, alone, all my senses are awash with her. Itâs not just about the sex, although our sexual chemistry is so unique itâs like experiencing a side to myself I didn't know existed. I have never felt so satiated after being with a woman, so complete that her body feels like a part of mine.
And when I talk to her, itâs like speaking to a long-lost friend I never knew I had. She knows what to say and guesses whatâs on my mind before I even say it.
Does that sound bizarre? Maybe, but itâs the way it is. I canât even extricate myself from this quagmire Iâm sunk in right now. My feet are in quicksand, and Iâm slowly sinking into this delicious feminine softness that is Dora Simpson, and I canât do anything about it.
I donât want to do anything about it.
All I know is that I have to keep her safe.
I clear my throat. âSo Dora is our number-one priority right now. We keep her safe and get Viktor.â
Dora clears her throat, and everyone looks at her. Her chin is up, and her eyes look defiant. She is no longer the shy and uncertain girl I saved that night.
