Reflection Questions

1.When is a time God provided unexpectedly? How does thinking of that make you thankful now?

2.In what ways can you hardwire praise, instead of grumbling, into your life?

3.Who in your life is (or can be) an example of faith, even during hard circumstances, to you and your children?

4.How will having an open hand and open life allow God to give what he loves to give?

Your Turn

Sometimes we don’t like to share our struggles with our kids. We want them to believe we have our act together. First, because we don’t want our kids to worry. Second, because we want to feel as if we are the ones our kids can depend on. But is dependence on us really the most important thing?

I felt weak telling my kids that we didn’t have enough money to cover Grandma’s caregiving expenses. I felt feeble fumbling through daily life with the newly added responsibilities—and I couldn’t hide it from my kids. They saw the bags under my eyes and the constant yawns.

Yet my kids also saw how others stepped forward to help, and I let them know how time and time again God provided. Instead of wondering why this had to happen, I found small ways to be grateful, just as Grandma was showing me.

Take some time today to be honest with your kids about your struggles. Then share all the ways you’ve turned to others and to God for help. Finally, share the unexpected blessings you’ve found along the way. And as you do this, your kids will also learn that it’s okay to turn to others and to God for help.
