Chapter 7

Azuri

A Couple of Weeks Later

Greg and I hadn't seen much of each other in the past few weeks, so I decided to see what he was up to. Pastor Yates preached a heartfelt sermon on love and faith. After his speech, my attitude on love and life changed. I'd been avoiding people, especially the members of my church, because I was still so embarrassed over what had occurred. I finally gathered the nerve to attend worship. After Sunday service, I found Greg talking to Pastor Yates and invited him over to do some catching up. I truly missed my best friend and felt partly to blame for us not being as close as we once were. I hated the fact that I’d let anyone get between us, and I planned on making it right. I was glad Greg accepted my invitation.

He met me at my house shortly after service ended.

“How you been holding up?” Greg asked.

“I’ve been making it.”

“I’m really sorry that you and Jawaan didn't work out.”

“It's all good. I still can't believe it myself sometimes.”

“I wish I would have never sent those pictures.”

“What pictures?”

“The ones of Jawaan and Stacy from church.”

“I never received them.”

“But you replied to the message. I thought that was the reason you were mad at me.”

“No, I never felt any type of way. I’ve just been keeping to myself.”

“So who replied to the message?”

The question had me in awe. Then I thought about it... Jawaan!

“It had to be Jawaan. I can't believe him!” My eyes watered up as I considered the betrayal.

“Don't cry.” Greg gave me a big hug.

The level of Jawaan's deception was slowly surfacing every day. There didn't seem to be an end in sight, but this new revelation had me at a loss for words. When you love a person, there’s supposed to be some kind of respect and honesty; he had neither.

Marcus crossed my mind. I’d thought about calling him a number of times but just never worked up the nerve. I wondered if was it too late. Had he moved on?

“I met a guy,” I finally revealed.

“Oh really? Tell me about him.”

“Well, it's nothing serious. We haven't actually been out on a date.”

“So what's the hold up?”

“I didn't wanna rush into nothing. I'm still trying digest the break-up with Jawaan.”

“I understand, but the past is the past. It's time you moved on from that chapter and write a new story. You’re still young. And life is too short. You gotta live for you sometimes. You have so much to offer. You're smart, loving, and the best friend anyone could ever have.”

We hugged each other and cried. My best friend was a caring person, who looked out for others more than himself. His charity work in the neighborhood showed how big his heart was.

“Now give that man a call.”

I extracted his business card from my purse. For a brief moment, all I did was stare at it, until I brought myself to make the call.

“Hello. This is Marcus Thomas speaking.
