Chapter 23
Amber
He doesnât say anything, and I can practically feel the tension coming off him. âCome on. It wasnât that bad.â
He looks down at me as weâre walking. âThat place is terrible. Youâre not going back there.â
I laugh. âHate to break it to you, Buddy. Thatâs the only place that will take my insurance. So, while itâs maybe not all roses and sunshine, at least itâs something.â I look away, feeling defensive. I start to veer towards my car. âWell, thanks for coming with me. Even though you didnât need to.â I told him a million times he didnât need to come to this appointment, but he insisted.
âHowâs the cramping and bleeding?â he asks, stopping my retreat.
I turn back to him and study his face, trying to decide if he really wants to know or if heâs just being nice. âItâs fine.â
âItâs fine as in it has stopped completely or itâs fine in that youâre not going to tell me?â he pushes.
âItâs fine.â
âAmber,â he says in frustration.
âWhat?â I give an exasperated laugh.
âAnybody ever tell you youâre stubborn?â he growls.
My eyes widen. âHave you ever looked in the mirror?â He rubs his chest, and I reach out and put my hand over his. âDonât do that.â He looks at me in surprise. âYou do that when youâre nervous or frustrated.â He gives me a look I canât decipher. I sigh. âLook, Iâm not trying to be a jerk. I appreciate everything youâve done for meââ
âIâd do so much more if youâd let me,â he says, cutting me off.
I shake my head. âYouâve done more than enough, Rico.â
âAmber, would you let me in?â he says in frustration. âPlease. You keep pushing me away. Do you not want me more involved? If not, you have to say so directly because thatâs how I deal. I deal in black and white. If you want me to butt out, youâre going to have to come out and say it. But if notâ¦â he steps closer. âYou have to stop pushing me away and start trusting me.â
I stare at him wide-eyed. âWhy would you want to get more involved with me?â
He huffs out a laugh, and his dark eyes meet mine. âYou just donât get it, do you?â
I cross my arms over my chest. âGet what?â
âThe fact that I want to be so much more involved in your life if you would just let me in,â he says in a low voice.
âWhy?â I canât help but ask. âYou barely know me.â
He steps closer, and I fight the urge to step backwards. âBecause from the first moment I saw you, and you yelled at me...â he smiles. âYou have fascinated me. Youâre the most gorgeous woman Iâve ever seen. I have this ache to be near you, to make you smile, to see you return to the person you were before...before Adam.â His eyes darken.
âBA....before Adam. Thatâs going to be my new timeline,â I say with a smirk. He doesnât return my smile.
âI just want to help, Amber.
