CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Paige waited impatiently in the hospital for the doctors to say that they could talk to Fabiano, pacing up and down outside the room they were keeping him in.
âWhat were you thinking?â
It didnât help that Christopher was anything but happy with the way sheâd handled things up on the bridge.
âI was thinking that there was a suspect getting away,â Paige replied.
âAn armed suspect, who you chased after alone,â Christopher replied. âYou could have been hurt, Paige. You could have been killed.â
Paige might almost have been touched by the concern in his voice had it not been for the implications of what he was saying.
âSo, what? You should have been the one to go after him alone instead?â Paige would have been just as afraid for him as he clearly was for her.
âYes! Iâm the more experienced agent. Iâm the one whoâs . . .â
âWhoâs what?â Paige demanded. âIâm a fully trained FBI agent, Christopher. Iâm trained to do this. You canât try to protect me from danger.â
âBut I should,â Christopher said. âIâve done more of this than you. Youâre a psychologist.â
âIâm an agent!â Paige snapped back. âIâve done the training. Iâve played a key part in taking down five killers and several other criminals. I faced down a serial killer even before I was an agent. So, donât tell me that I canât chase after bad guys.â
There was something almost insulting about him trying to protect her like that. Like he didnât trust her to be able to do her job. A part of Paige knew that it just came from the fact that he cared about her, but heâd already told her after theyâd kissed that they couldnât be together. If that was true, then he couldnât try to hold her back and keep her from doing her job.
âWhen you shot him, was he coming at you?â Christopher asked.
Paige nodded. âHe still had the knife, heâd advanced several steps, and he tried to charge me.â
She knew all of that might be important in the future. She had to be able to demonstrate that sheâd used force correctly when sheâd fired her weapon, and on a lonely bridge that might be hard to prove. Maybe there would be cameras on the bridge. Even if there werenât, Paige felt certain that her version of events was likely to be believed when Fabiano had already stabbed someone.
It turned out, though, that it wasnât what Christopher was worried about.
âAnd you didnât put rounds center mass? You shot him in the shoulder?â
âI thought that I could take him down without killing him,â Paige said.
âYou risked your own life doing that,â Christopher insisted. He sounded worried. âWhat if heâd been on PCP or meth? He was clearly high on something. What if heâd just ignored the pain and kept coming?â
Paige shook her head. âYou think I should have just killed him?â
âIf it was your life or his, yes!â
âBut it wasnât,â Paige pointed out. âI took him down, and he didnât have to die.â
Christopher didnât look happy about that.
