The school year ended as we completed our finals and made plans for our prom and graduation.
Rachel made plans to go to France as soon as the school year was over so not knowing exactly what her plans were, I asked Ashlee to the prom. Both affairs turned out to be super as we concluded our high school adventure and prepared to spend our last summer at home before our college life began.
With Rachel gone, it was back to our usual threesome with Ashlee, Megan, and I. Megan had dumped her longtime boyfriend Tom since she finally decided he had no long-term interests except to get her in bed so she took my advice and moved on without him. But it did bolster her self-esteem and she was seeing quite a few guys instead of settling in with just one. She was definitely a lot happier.
I returned to my lifeguard job for the summer, and both the girls returned to their previous jobs. We needed to save all the money we could during the summer to help pay for our college trip and expenses.
The summer flew by, as it normally does, and before we knew it we were packing our suitcases for our new adventures. Ashlee and I would both be leaving within a few days of each other, her flying south to North Carolina and me driving up to IUP. She and Megan spent almost all day together on her last day just shopping, packing, and saying their goodbyes. Ashleeâs flight was at 7am the next morning so her parents wanted her to get a good nightâs sleep before her flight.
We continued our tradition of sitting out on the curb that last night and both were more quiet than usual. It just seemed so hard for us to say goodbye after being so close for twelve years, but as the evening drifted its way to nighttime we knew the time had come.
âI canât believe Iâm leaving tomorrow morning and wonât see you again for months, itâs almost like a nightmare just thinking about it,â she said as we held hands and looked intently into each otherâs eyes.
âI know Ash. I canât believe it either. The summer went by so fast and here we are about to go away to college in opposite directions. Itâs gonnaâ be so hard not seeing your smile every day like I always have.â
I could see a tear rolling down her cheek as her eyes filled up and became glassy. I leaned over and kissed the tear away and moved my lips to hers. Her arms immediately went around my neck as she burst out crying.
âOh Tim, Iâm gonna miss you so much. I just canât stand this.â
I held her close and crushed her tightly against my body as our embrace filled the next few moments. Silence was the only appropriate response as our two bodies were forged into one. She felt so good against me and the thought of this being the last time I could embrace her was almost too much to bear.
