CHAPTER SEVEN

MIKKI was just getting into her car when a shadow appeared at her open driver’s door and her heart nearly jumped right out of her chest. She clutched at her throat, her breathing so ragged she couldn’t get her voice to work for a moment or two.

‘Sorry, did I scare you?’ Lewis said.

‘I—I thought you had left hours ago,’ she said.

‘I did some paperwork in my rooms,’ he said. ‘It hardly seemed fair to go home to bed while you were still here looking after my patient.’

‘It’s my job,’ she said, looking at the dashboard rather than his ice-floe eyes.

‘Maybe, but you don’t have to go the extra mile for me.’

‘I wasn’t doing it for you,’ she said. ‘I was doing it for Jenny Upton.’

‘All the same, I appreciate it.’

Mikki tucked a loose strand of hair back behind her ear with a hand that wasn’t quite steady. ‘I’d better be going…’ She forced herself to meet his eyes. ‘Was there something in particular you wanted to see me about?’

‘Actually, I was wondering if you could give me a lift.’

She frowned at him. ‘What happened to your car?’

‘It had to go back to the workshop,’ he said. ‘There was a problem with the fuel-injection system. I didn’t get a chance to pick it up as I was stuck in Theatre for so long.’

‘There’s a taxi rank at the front of the hospital,’ she said, hating herself for sounding so uncharitable and unhelpful but it was late and she was tired and she was too affected by his presence to trust herself with him even for the short duration of a car trip. She could still taste his kiss. Every time she licked her lips she felt the tingles of where he had been. Every nerve was affected, hungry for more. He would only have to look at her mouth and she would be tempted to press hers to his. And who knew what would happen next? Well, she did know and that’s why she needed some distance.

‘There’s a fifteen-minute waiting time,’ Lewis said. ‘I already checked. Apparently there’s a concert on at the entertainment centre tonight.’

Mikki triggered the passenger door lock as she let out a sigh of defeat. ‘Get in.’

He got in and gave her directions to the serviced apartment he was renting in Bondi, and after a lengthy period of silence asked, ‘What’s wrong, Mikki?’

‘Nothing.’

He gave a short bark of wry laughter. ‘When a woman says nothing is wrong it invariably means the opposite. What have I done now?’

‘You haven’t done anything,’ she said. ‘I’m just tired.’ And I think I’m falling in love with you all over again.

‘Yes, it’s been one of those days, that’s for sure,’ he said. ‘It was a bad moment when I got that call from ICU.’

Mikki flicked her gaze to him as she waited for a traffic light to change. ‘Mark Upton was beside himself with panic,’ she said. She faced the road again and added, ‘He didn’t seem prepared at all for something like this happening.
