TYPES OF LISTENING
One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.
—Bryant H. McGill
As a listener, you must first understand the type of listening. This helps you gel with the situation.
Content Listening: Listening to the Untold Story
First is content listening, that is, when you are listening to gather information or to learn something or keeping yourself abreast of a situation.
‘Our sales performance for the last financial year has been good, with the overall operating margins improving by 10 per cent year-on-year.’ ‘We have been able to retain about 90 per cent of our existing clients. The sales figures have improved in almost all the regions except for pockets in down south and some regions in the east. For the western regions the sales were mostly muted, with sales from key clients marginally increasing or decreasing.’
You hear these on a daily basis while you talk to your manager or colleague. Never be judgmental about them. Hear them as if you are trying to garner information. However, the moment you start analysing it while it is being said, you are getting sidetracked from just listening to the content. So when do you analysing? Only if you need to. Else do not analyse such information. The analysis must be kept post the listening. Three things that will guide you through this. First focus on what is being said, second critically do not examine such content and third listen to the message as a source of information. Never challenge the speaker. You are being counter-productive as the information you gather is rarely going to help you. However, you may ask questions or clarify your doubts.
