Guidance and the Gift of Prophecy

And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.... [Agabus the prophet] took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

God has several ways of showing His children His will for their lives. He speaks through the written Word—the Bible. He speaks through the preached Word as His ministers preach the Bible. He guides through controlling circumstances. And He speaks through the gift of prophecy at times.* This is an area in which great care must be exercised, however, as some have fallen into error here. We must be careful to follow scriptural guidelines.
