Writing on Nontraditional Surfaces
Using wood, fabric, leather, or other surface in lieu of paper creates unique, lasting artwork. You can also create a calligraphic look using writing implements that aren’t specifically designed for calligraphy. For example, there are a range of chalk markers or even oil-based paint pens.
Fabric
A practical approach to writing on fabric is to use a brush. You can experiment with fabric pens, too.
There are also a few techniques to transfer your work onto fabric without having to write directly on the material itself. If you know how to embroider, transfer your calligraphic designs to your project that way. Your calligraphy artwork could be silkscreened, or made into a repeating pattern and digitally printed; these techniques will vary depending on the type of printer used.
My friend Angela Liguori at Studio Carta makes beautiful ribbons. Her factory in Italy had certain artwork requirements, so I provided the original artwork on smooth-finish Bristol board. The factory printed the alphabet ribbon with white opaque ink on black fabric, and the result was stunning.
You can also visit spoonflower.com, an online custom-printing company, to easily transfer your image onto fabric, wallpaper, gift wrap, and more.
