Alma watched her daughter sit huddled in a blanket on the couch, the hair dry now and rising around her face like webs spun from underneath. There was nothing to say. She leaned back, too, keeping her arm an inch from the blanket though it was as hard as anything she’d ever done.

Hosea came in awhile later, squinting and lowering himself to his knee. “That you, Sofelia?” he said, his voice hoarse, and she only dropped her face into her lap.

Alma shook her head in the dark, seeing his face all angles in the light through the lace curtains. “Julius tryin to find the boy,” Hosea said, and then he went back outside.

Alma thought about how hard Hosea had been on all of them, how distant from Sofelia. But that was his way. And she had held this baby so tight, tied her to her back when she walked the long path to downtown, performed every ritual with infinite care. The narrow chest had only just begun to mound when she had disappeared. A son? Where was the man with the pillow-muscled arms, the one Sofelia had whispered about to her when she dreamed?

She was afraid to speak, then, afraid the words might drive Sofelia into another room. Alma closed her eyes and only listened to the breathing beside her.
