One of the common criticisms of video-game play is that it makes children less creative. Old-school educators believe that unstructured play, in which kids are left to play with simple household itemsâsuch as boxes, pencils, and tapeâfosters more creativity than modern technological tools and video games. These critics believe that less complex toys and games are better for developing childrenâs imaginations.
Studies suggest that the opposite is true. As reported by Sandra Russ and Jessica Dillon of Case Western Reserve University, researchers who have been studying childrenâs play over the last four decades have found that kids growing up in the twenty-first century are far more creative than kids from the twentieth century. This creativity is due to all the incredible things that kids are able to do with technology. High-tech toys have more options in how to play with them. For example, because old-style wooden blocks are all more or less the same, children are limited in how they can use them. More recent versions of blocks, such as LEGO or KâNEX, are varied in size, shape, color, and function, so they can be made into an unlimited number of variations. While some modern toys and video games have a structured, noncreative component (think about rigidly following the instructions for a LEGO Star Wars figure), most have many ways to use them. Similarly, popular board games have a single platform and, most often, only one level for play, while the same game in a video game format can have multiple levels, designs, and challenges.
