CHAPTER 8

LEADING IN LEATHER

These days, consumer products can come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. The cheapest options are synthetic, man-made items that can be quickly and easily mass-produced and sold across the world. Despite a growing trend of making things in the least expensive way, there’s still a market for traditional leather products. Leather goods made by hand appeal to consumers because of their simple styling, rustic feel, and superior durability. If leather, and its distinctive smell and texture, interests you, why not explore a career as a leatherworker?

WORKED INTO A LEATHER

Leather products are items—from vests to bracelets and more—made from the skin or hide of animals. Cowhide, which is relatively easy to acquire, is used most frequently by both mass-producers and traditional artisans. Leatherworkers also use goatskin, pigskin, calfskin, sheepskin, and steer hide. The type of skin depends on the item being produced and the target price point. Leather has many uses; it has a place in clothing, shoes, belts, hats, furniture, and even sculpture. The potential for leather products is almost limitless.
