Chapter 19: Marshal
My dad had been calling me constantly for the past two days. I hadn't answered. Eventually, I'd blocked his number.
But that was wrong. So, here I was, outside his business headquarters.
I was no longer going to visit him at home, after what happened the last time. I wasn't having him rage at me like that, especially not over Sloane, throwing glass bottles at me. I was going to marry her whether he liked it or not. If Sloane would agree to it, we could move out of New York and keep our distance from him. I didn't want him intimidating her or otherwise meddling with my family.
Family?
We hadn't talked about when we'd start a family. I definitely wanted us to have kids but we were still young. We had plenty of time.
I remained in the car, praying that this would go well.
Who was I kidding? It wasn't going to go well. But meeting him here, at work, meant he'd be careful how he yelled at me. He wouldn't want his staff to hear him.
Please touch his heart, I prayed silently. I know You can do miracles.
It was going to take a miracle to get my dad to accept that I was marrying Sloane and not try to stand in the way.
I felt almost nauseous as I left my car and entered the building. I'd called the receptionist on my way over to ask if my dad was in.
She smiled when she saw me. "He's expecting you. Go straight up."
I couldn't smile back. I rode the elevator to the top floor.
My dad's secretary looked up when I emerged from the elevator. "Hi, Marshal."
"Hey. Can I go in?"
"Yes. Can I get you a cup ofâ"
"I'm fine." I strode towards the door. "Thanks," I added belatedly.
I entered my dad's office. He was standing by the window, looking out. I'd looked out of that window many times and knew the view was incredible, but today I didn't even notice it.
My dad turned. There was a dangerous look in his eyes. "Why are you here?"
"Because you've been calling me."
"Let's not beat around the bush, Marshal. You're here to tell me that you've proposed to Sloane Golding."
I didn't admit it.
My dad removed a photo from his pocket and held it up. It was a picture of Sloane and me at the Garden of Lights. Heat rushed into my cheeks at the sight of it. How had a journalist gotten in? And why would the journalist send the picture to my dad rather than to some magazine?
My dad tucked the picture back into his pocket. He looked calm today. Maybe he'd been taking his medication.
"I hope you're listening carefully, Marshal, because I'm only going to say this once."
I forced some steel into my heart, prepared for battle.
"Your relationship with Sloane is going nowhere. I demand that you break it offâ"
"Sorry, Dad, but no. I'm marrying Sloane."
My dad closed his eyes briefly and then continued. "Then you leave me no choiceâ¦" He trailed off, no doubt just to scare me.
