Episode Thirteen
When Jimmy got out of his meeting with Joel Bass, he checked his messages and found a voicemail from Tony. He returned the call, caught the answering machine, and left a message of his own. With no update about Eidolon, Jimmy decided to follow up on what he had learned from Joel.
But it would involve a very unpleasant conversation with someone he liked.
It took Jimmy a while to get through Orlandoâs mid-day traffic and while he drove, he tried to reorganize what Joel had told him into some version of a linear narrative. It all made sense when he had heard it sitting at the pool in a country club. Now he just needed to fit that narrative into the big picture. This was hard to do with the pieces of the puzzle he already had. He knew money launderers were sniffing around, he knew Percy Manson was hiding something, he knew there were accidents at the park, and he now knew the tragic story behind Karen Dixon.
What he didnât know was how it all fit together, and the only person who could help him do that was Karen herself.
Rape is a tricky subject for lawyers, especially for defense attorneys like Jimmy. This is because if you see a crying woman and she says someone hurt her, you will feel a natural human reaction to believe her and help her. Lawyers canât have those instincts. Instead, they will try to ditch those pesky emotions and ask that woman point-blank what she was doing when âmy client was allegedly perpetrating the acts he has been unjustly accused of.â In a profession where you canât take anything at face value, you donât make a lot of friends.
It hurt worse now because the face value belonged to the woman who had been kind enough to invite him into her home.
When Karenâs door opened after he knocked on it, Jimmy was dismayed to see Maritza standing on the other side of the door smiling, âOh, hey Jimmy!â Maritza saw the bandages on his face and hands and bit her lip, âYou okay?â
âI cut myself shaving.â Jimmy tried to smile, but didnât feel all that happy.
âAre you looking for Midge?â
No, Iâm looking for your girlfriend so I can ask her about the guy who sexually assaulted her, were the words he wanted to say but instead, he replaced it with a bland lie: âActually Iâm here to talk to Karen about her benefits package.â
Maritza was a good person and good people tended not to ask too many questions, so Jimmyâs lie was received like it was gospel. It made no sense that the Parkâs chief legal officer was paying a home visit to a line employee over benefits, but Maritza was just a trusting person. âYou know what? I think she did mention she had some questions about that. Come on in, sheâs on the balcony.â The big woman stepped aside and Jimmy entered the apartment. Maybe it was because of his mission or maybe it was because he was there during the day, but the place suddenly seemed cheap and less cozy.
