Dallas

Today was the day.

The day the prosecution called Miss Meesha Ross to the stand.

It wasn’t a big deal, strategy-wise. I had nineteen rebuttal witnesses that would poke holes in her story, big enough that you could drive a truck through them.

Her story was that she entered the bus of her own volition, but was not allowed to leave until the bus reached Midling. I knew for a fact that she was offered a bus ride home at every tour stop, but my guess was that she was lying in the trial in order to bolster a civil suit later on. She didn’t need Terio to be guilty in this case. She had dollar signs in her eyes.

He was so confident today. I think he actually believed Jaz had taken care of the problem. I knew otherwise, but I kept that shit to myself. I wasn’t supposed to know shit, so I acted like I didn’t.

When Meesha walked in, Terio looked over at me, eyes wide. I shook my head as subtly as I could. You never want the jury to see you react, good or bad. He needed to keep cool, at all costs.

“Don’t say shit,” I said under my breath. “Just look straight ahead and don’t react.”

Against my advice, he turned his head. Not to look at Meesha, but to glare at Jaz.

She was front and center again, wearing something pretty, but her confidence had clearly taken a hit. She refused to make eye contact with either one of us, and she seemed spaced out, like she wanted to be somewhere else.

She wasn’t the only one, though. I wanted to be somewhere else, too. In my bed. With Jaz on top of me, her lips pressing against mine.

That kiss...I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about it.

“I swear.”

At the sound of Meesha's voice, I looked up, shocked that I had daydreamed my way through her being seated and sworn in.

For the next four hours, Miss Ross lied her ass off, and I spent most of my time keeping Terio from flying off the handle.

I understood the instinct. It’s hard to listen to somebody sit up and lie on you, especially when your freedom is at stake. But reacting never helps, so I kept that leash tight, talking to him under my breath, reassuring him I would eat her ass up on cross.

But we didn’t get to it. The judge wanted to start fresh in the morning. And that was fine with me. I was prepared, but an extra day to run through my notes would only help me on cross.

As spectators filed out of the courtroom, Terio stood and mumbled under his breath.

“It’s okay, Terio. Just hang tight. It ain’t over.”

“That little bitch was—”

“Lying. I know. We know. The jury will know too by tomorrow. Alright? Don’t sweat that.”

“Yo, she wasn’t even supposed to...” he trailed off.

I waited, playing dumb.

He scrubbed a hand down his face. “Yo, do me a favor. Tell Jaz I don’t fuck wit her no more.
