It makes sense to see these provisions in a slightly longer historical perspective since from the late nineteenth century Americans have been pledging allegiance to the flag in a ritual that performs one’s citizenship. The words which comprise the pledge were originally published in 1892, in the 8 September issue of The Youth’s Companion, the then leading family magazine. Its author was Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister. Bellamy had been a chairman of a committee of state superintendents of education in the National Education Association and had been in charge of designing the programme for the public schools’ quadricentennial celebration of Columbus Day in 1892. He created a flag-raising ceremony for this occasion and wrote the pledge as a salute to be given the flag as it was raised. His original read:

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
