Chapter Sixteen

The smell of book pages and leather bindings surrounded me as I sat against the large window on the top floor of the library.

The meeting had gone well the night before, with only a few arguments between actual planning. After hours of discussion, they had finally come up with a cohesive plan. I still wasn’t sure how I felt about being used as bait, but at this point in the game, I didn’t have much choice.

I sighed, watching particles of dust swirl through the air in front of the book I was holding. I liked reading much more than my siblings ever had. But this was almost torture. I hadn’t slept after the meeting. The only reason I wasn’t still wearing a ball dress was that Kian had threatened to lock me in our room if I didn’t shower and change. He could sense I was tense. I’d admit I felt better after getting into some comfy pajamas and after the nice, hot shower I’d had with him.

With a smile, I licked my finger then used it to flip to the next page. It was an old tome, one filled with symbols of fallen kingdoms and tales of past leaders. I might have enjoyed the text if my eyes weren't strained from reading for hours and my muscles tight from sitting in the same spot for so long. The goal was to dig up whatever information I could find on the gods and their past interventions with our ways of life. So far, I wasn’t coming up with much. A bold determination kept me going, though, a need to find an answer to all of our woes—preferably a peaceful solution.

The more I read about the gods’ wrath, the less hope I had for us. It seemed that they weren’t shy about destroying anything in their way. It was honestly a little shocking to think that they hadn’t done anything to wipe us out before, judging by how far back their resentment for us had gone. Tales of kings and queens who resisted worship of them and the things that had coincidentally happened because of it sent shivers down my spine. Plagues. Famine. Drought. There seemed to be no end to the gods’ cruelty to my people and fae kind in general.

My eyes darted over the gruesome imagery of torture devices, and I turned the page as quickly as my fingers would allow in my sleepy state of mind. I was so engrossed in my research that I didn’t hear the whoosh of wind. It was only when I saw something move from the corner of my eye that I looked up, jumping as I saw Cole staring down at me.

“What the hell, Cole? You frightened me.” I gasped, clutching my chest as the tome fell to the wood floor with a loud thud.

He pointed at a spot on the bench next to me, and I scooted over.

“Yeah, of course. Come sit down.”

“Sorry for scaring you,” he said with a shrug.
