LONGEVITY JUNKIE TAKEAWAYS

We live in a sea of constant exposures, and our pets often bear more of the “body burden” brunt because they are closer to the ground and cannot take many of the same kinds of precautions we can to reduce or mitigate those exposures.

Studies reveal vast amounts of chemical residues in the urine of both cats and dogs exceed healthy thresholds. Reduce chemical exposure by “greening up” your home, inside and out.

These chemicals are found in obvious places, like cleaning agents and herbicides in lawn care. But they’re also found in unlikely places, such as scented candles and air fresheners, off-gassing furniture (including the pet bed!), the water supply, flea and tick treatments, and all manner of plastics, including those in popular pet toys.

Dogs are especially sensitive to excess noise, light at the wrong time of day, and electrostatic pollution. Overexposure to artificial light adversely impacts a dog’s metabolism, immune function, mood, and behavior. Open up your shades in the morning, and turn off the lights, computer, router, and TV at night.

Twice-daily sniffaris—one in the early morning and another in the evening—are great ways to reset your dog’s biological, circadian clock.
