Luke followed James Mivart, the owner and manager of the hotel into the suite of rooms, his new wife on his arm, two other footmen entering behind them with their bags.

“How pretty,” Kitty said, as she took in the flowers that adorned the sitting room.

“Very,” Luke agreed, his eyes on her. My wife. His mind kept replaying the word. Perhaps if he said it often enough, it would begin to seem real.

Luke had taken a suite for three nights. When he asked Uncle Baldwin if he minded putting off their trip north for eight days because Luke wanted to marry Kitty and bring her north with them, Uncle Baldwin insisted he take at least a month. “Lady Kitty will not want to spend the first few days of her marriage travelling to Cumberland with me and Paul to play gooseberry,” he objected.

Kitty, when consulted, retorted, “I am not such a ninny as that. As long as we do not share our room with them at night.” She blushed, then, and hid her face with her hands, so that Luke had to gently pull them away to kiss her, and it was some time before he returned to the subject.

“I like the idea of some time alone with you before we make the journey,” he admitted. Three nights, they agreed, and another three in London while they finished preparing to go North. They were fortunate that Mivart’s Hotel, which rented by-the-month accommodation to wealthy visitors to London, had a suite left empty because the previous occupants had cut short their stay.

“The refreshments have been set out as you ordered, sir,” Mivart said. “Please let us know if there is anything else you require.”

Luke had everything his heart desired within arm’s reach, and the only other thing he required was for Mivart to follow the two footmen out of the door. He looked at Kitty, referring the question to her, but she shook her head.

“Nothing at the moment, thank you,” he told the man.

“Then it remains only for me to say, on behalf of the hotel, that we wish you a very happy stay at Mivart’s, Mr and Mrs Ogilvy, and a long and prosperous life together.” He bowed.

Luke and Kitty murmured their thanks and the hotel manager left. Luke locked the door, placing the hat he had removed on the shelf above the coat hooks to the right of the door, and shrugging out of his overcoat.

When he turned, Kitty stood where he had left her, still in her redingote and bonnet, her arms crossing her body, her hands clutching her elbows. She was ill at ease, poor darling.

“Would you like to give me your coat and bonnet?” Luke asked.

She looked down as if surprised to find she was still dressed for the outdoors. “Oh, yes. Of course.” Her chuckle was more nervous than amused. “I am still wearing my gloves, even.” She removed first one and then the other. She tugged at her bonnet ribbon, but somehow managed to pull it into a knot.
