Knox patted the dark inkblot seeping across the creamy parchment with a rag. Too much ink on the quill had dripped onto the page, and when he tried to dab at it, the stain spread even more. Usually his work was scrupulous but a sleepless night had left him too woolly-headed and clumsy to concentrate on the document he had to copy. Fearsome images of Patrick Hamilton, burning on his funeral pyre and his own guilt-stricken conscience had kept him awake till dawn. Could he not have done or said something to save the martyr?

He rubbed furiously at the infernal stain until he had scraped a hole in the expensive calfskin parchment. Seething with helpless frustration, he lay his head down on his arms. His hot tears splashed onto the parchment, creating more splotches and dissolving his scrupulous handwriting.
