10.6 SOLUTION OF THE FINITE ELEMENT–BOUNDARY INTEGRAL SYSTEM

In this section we discuss some solution techniques for the system of equations obtained using the FE–BI formulation as well as a highly effective preconditioner for a fast iterative solution.

10.6.1 Outward- versus Inward-Looking Approach

A typical FE–BI system, no matter whether in two or three dimensions, consists of two sets of equations: One results from the finite element discretization, which can be written as

(10.194)

and the other results from the boundary integral discretization, which can be written as

(10.195)

The matrices and vectors appearing in these two equations are described as follows:

[K] N × N square matrix, symmetric and sparse

[B] N × Ns rectangular matrix, sparse

[P] Ns × N rectangular matrix, having N2s nonzero elements

[Q] Ns × Ns square matrix, fully populated

{ϕ} N × 1 column vector, unknown

{} Ns × 1 column vector, unknown

{b} Ns × 1 column vector, known,
