The historical Buddha went through a great deal of personal testing and proving—of himself, of the traditional culture he inherited, of the experimenters of his time, and of the mental exercises he learned in his search.

There are many different methods of meditation in Buddhism to accommodate the differences in individual needs and temperaments. The only meditations traditionally recommended for everyone are thoughts of good will and remembrance of death.

The first system introduced here was originally set up to take the contingency factor into account by building adaptability into its design. The classical blueprint of the system is very old, but its approach contains procedures for individualizing the exercises to prevent meditation from deteriorating into a mechanical performance.
