Scholars of flamenco necessarily encounter difficulties intrinsic to studying musical forms that do not accord with the nationalist assumptions undergirding the field of musicology, though they also must navigate ongoing anxieties concerning the Arabic and Jewish genealogy of European cultural forms. Even among scholars expressly concerned with the musical relationship between Spain and the Middle East, the affirmation that Middle Eastern elements adhere in Spanish musical forms often takes a highly circuitous formulation. In a conversation with Cruces Roldán, whose work has extensively documented the many diverse points of connection binding Andalusi music with flamenco, she began, much to my surprise, by emphasizing difference rather than commonality: “There are few direct connections between flamenco and Andalusi music. The scales, the rhythms, the instruments: one finds more divergence than convergence. Just as we have little in common with Moroccan culture.” In the introduction to her book on the commonalities linking these two musical genres, Cruces Roldán hesitates to take any position on the relation or nonrelation of the two, stating rather that “the pages that follow serve, not to seal an argument for or against one viewpoint or the other, but as an attempt to suggest criteria of judgment in connection to both” (Cruces Roldán 2003, 14). It is only in her conclusion to this work, indeed, in its last sentence, itself hedged and hesitant, that she finally arrives at a positive statement:
