“I think we have everything set for tomorrow,” Roger said as he wiped down the largest counter in the restaurant’s kitchen Friday night.

Will peered inside the refrigerator and shook his head. “No, we don’t. We have a problem.” He picked up a container of tomatoes. “We won’t make it through tomorrow with just these.” He set the container back into the refrigerator and then turned to his brother. “Can you get Danielle’s driver to take you home?”

“I was going to ride home with Danielle anyway. But what are you planning?”

“I’ll see if I can get Austin to take me by Salina’s haus, and I’ll buy enough tomatoes from her to last until Wednesday.”

Roger narrowed his eyes and tilted his head. “Do we really need tomatoes? Or is this just a reason to see Salina?”

Will opened the refrigerator and pointed to the small package. “Do you think this is enough to make it until Wednesday?”

“No, but I don’t think we need more tonight.”

“I do, and I’m the chef around here. We have enough to do in the morning.”

“Whatever you say, boss.” Roger threw his hands into the air and then pulled off his apron. “See you later.”

“Rog,” Will called after him. “Wait.”

Roger turned and looked at him. “What?”

“How are things going with Danielle?”

Roger’s expression softened. “We’re getting to know each other. She’s really sweet, and we get along well.”

“When are you going to ask her out?”

“Soon.” Roger rubbed the back of his neck, a gesture Will had always seen him do when he was nervous.

“What are you afraid of?”

Roger pursed his lips. “What if she says no?”

Will grinned. “Trust me. She won’t say no.”

“Don’t worry about me.” Roger pointed at him. “You need to worry about what you’re doing to Caroline by spending so much energy on Salina. Trust me when I tell you you’ll regret it.” He turned and started toward the exit. “I’m leaving.”

After Will locked up, he climbed into Austin’s van. Austin had no problem taking the short ride to Salina’s house. But when he steered into the driveway just past the Lancaster County Cabinets sign, Will’s heart pounded with doubt. Maybe this was a bad idea. Hadn’t he concluded he shouldn’t visit Salina’s house when they’d talked about her garden?

But this was different. He needed those tomatoes.

“I won’t be long,” he told Austin before walking up the driveway to the two-story, white house with the wraparound porch. He scanned the property, taking in the large, red barn and four matching workshops that sat in front of a pasture fence.

Beyond the pasture, he spotted Salina’s vast garden, and he smiled. It was more glorious than he imagined. The garden was large, and the raised beds, surrounded by fencing, seemed to reach the sky. The rows were uniform, and the plants were green and beautifully tended.

“May I help you?”

Will spun to find an Amish man, who looked to be about his age, staring at him with a stern expression. He was just about Will’s height, and he had the same light-brown hair and bright-blue eyes Salina had.
