LEAKYCON—ORLANDO, JULY, AND DENVER, OCTOBER

leakycon.com

The ultimate gatherinng for Harry Potter nerds! Since its first con over a decade ago, LeakyCon programming has expanded to include huge stars, wizard rock concerts, book signings, and more. Though this con was founded by a Harry Potter fansite, it’s one of the slickest cons out there.

SECRET BONUS: The LeakyCon Marketplace carries some of the best Potter-based fanart in the whole world. If you’re looking for some secret treasures worthy of the Room of Requirement, this is where you’ll find them.

TORONTO COMICS ARTS FESTIVAL—TORONTO, MAY

torontocomics.com

For the more serious indie comics fan, TCAF is a low-key (no cosplay here!) weekend festival that features tons of comics-related events. Held in a huge public library in downtown Toronto (and totally free), comics creators from around the world can exhibit their wares (think cool mini comics and zines), and readers can attend panel discussions, gallery shows, and programming for kids.

SECRET BONUS: Local gaming collectives team up with TCAF to concurrently put on Comics vs Games! a mini con that includes panels with illustrators, comic creators, and game makers on the differences and similarities between the comics and gaming industries. (Also check out the Bit Bazaar, where artisans sell their gaming-related goodies.)

YALLFEST—CHARLESTON, EARLY NOVEMBER

yallfest.org

This Charleston, South Carolina, festival is devoted to—you could even say obsessed with—young adult literature. YALLFest usually draws over fifty big-name authors (past guests include Sarah J. Maas, Tomi Adeyemi, Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl, and Gayle Forman) for panels, discussions, and signings. The best part? All the programming is free free free! The opposite coast version, YALLWest, takes place every April in SoCal.

SECRET BONUS: Okay, I lied. The best part is definitely the famous YA Smackdown, where every author guest at the con has to get up on stage, form teams, and compete in storytelling games for the Golden Pie award. It’s basically an awesome author rap battle.
