Yes, Sous Chef!

The Ortiz sisters spent a few days finishing their packing and then settling into the guest house. Carmen didn’t have any trouble spreading her things out into their new, bigger surroundings. She tended to be a maximalist and careless with her belongings, as evinced in her many sentimental little wall hangings and framed pictures and knick-knacks floating haphazardly in boxes. At times the sisters butted heads over Carmen’s lack of tidiness and Ana’s intolerance of clutter, but over the years they had come to an understanding: as long as Ana’s room, bathroom (if they had to share) and the kitchen stayed tidy, peaceful cohabitation was possible.

By the time Ana took over Ellie’s kitchen, she was more than ready to start cooking and getting into the swing of her new schedule. She was still doing the early routine with Gavin and his pre- and post-workout smoothies and egg whites, but later, after he had left for work, she also offered Ellie’s domestic and security staff breakfast to order. Ana thought that it was telling of Ellie’s sweet personality that after hiring a personal chef, she wanted to share the benefit with all of her household. As it was always painful to see the food one had cooked growing old and inferior in a buffet line situation, she very much enjoyed cooking eggs the way each person liked them, to be eaten immediately. It was also a bit of a fun culture shock to be around more people in her daily life: Terry, always cheerful, the two full-time maids who were constantly busy keeping up with the size of the mansion, the gardeners, and of course the ribbing and teasing security guys, including Beast and Clark. It really did remind her of belowstairs at Downton Abbey but with less drama. As far as the romance Carmen had predicted, Ana wasn’t as comfortable around her chosen beau as she had once been, but he still smiled (seemingly involuntarily) when he saw her, and she thought she would get over herself soon.

After everyone had been served breakfast, she would begin preparing lunch while Terry took care of the dishes—a lovely perk that Ana was going to have to try hard not to get too spoiled by.

The first week passed without her seeing Brandon in the mornings or much at all, but then he began to show up in the kitchen regularly.

He had silently appeared at 9 o'clock one morning, just as she had been about to shut down the griddle. Brandon shrugged off the friendly hand Clark had placed on his shoulder at his appearance and asked her if she was still making breakfast.

“Of course. I’ve got some toppings here and I can do an omelet or a scramble for you. Or if you don’t want to pick, I’ll just make you chef’s choice.”

“Okay.”

“Anything you don’t like?”

“I’ll eat anything.”

She smiled. “That’s music to my ears.”

His ears reddened at the comment, and she told herself to dial down the friendliness and give him more space.
