Knowledge of the World

It is somewhat paradoxical that an account of perceptual cognition deriving from one of the formative discoveries of the scientific revolution, on the nature and behaviour of light, should end up not simply distancing us from the world but opening up a gulf between what we can know and what there is. But the representational account of perception quickly became a representational account of knowledge per se. Locke sums up the problem clearly in his Essay Concerning Human Understanding:

‘Tis evident, the Mind knows not Things immediately, but only by the intervention of the Ideas it has of them. Our Knowledg therefore is real, only so far as there is a conformity between our Ideas and the Reality of Things. But what shall be here the Criterion? How shall the Mind, when it perceives nothing but its own Ideas, know that they agree with Things themselves?13
