“You broke the contract.” Kendra sulked, from her place in the passenger seat. “What the hell?”

“Is something wrong?” I asked, as I drove through the roads. “It looks like I saved your life, too.”

“Alex wasn’t going to kill me.” Kendra shook her head. “He just likes scaring me, pissing me off, whatever. He just likes it when I feel something. He thinks it means I still care about him, if he can still make me feel something.”

“Do you?”

“Do I what?”

“Do you still care about him?” I asked her while I checked the rearview mirror. “Because if you want to be with him, Kendra, I can always turn the car around and drop you back off.”

“No. I don’t want to be with him.” Kendra paused. “But that’s not the point. Why the hell did you break the contract? I only asked you for one thing, Chris, and you couldn’t even give that to me?”

“No. I couldn’t.” I continued. “I’m sorry. I thought that I could, but when I saw you, with your bag packed and that scared look in your eye... I had to follow you, just to make sure you were safe.”

“You followed me?” She sounded surprised. “I didn’t even notice another car on the road.”

“Because I waited about an hour after you left.”

“Wait. Then how did you follow me if—” She stopped herself, as she seemed to come to a realization. “You put a fucking tracker in my car, didn’t you?”

“Of course.” I replied. “But not for your sake. It was for Lisa’s. I wanted to be sure of where she was, at all times, even when she was with you. I trust you, Kendra, but accidents happen. I just wanted to be able to handle things in a timely manner.”

“That’s sweet, but it’s still a little fucked up.” Kendra rolled her eyes. “You really walk that line, don’t you?”

“Your words, not mine.” I smirked. “What the hell were you doing caught up with that asshole, anyway? Did you used to...work for him or something?”

“I wasn’t a prostitute. If that’s what you’re implying.” She rolled her eyes yet again. “He’s my ex-boyfriend, Alex Martin. He’s the head of one of the—”

“Biggest gangs on the West Coast. I know the name.” I nodded. “Never seen his face, though. Just remembered hearing rumors that he was coming up, back in the day.”

“Back in the day? Back when you were involved in gang stuff, too?” She asked.

“Yeah. Back when I cared about shit like that.” I answered. “I guess he got where he was going, then. Although, I have no idea how you got hooked up with a guy like that. You’re way too good for him, Kendra.”

“I met him when we were teenagers. And back then, he wasn’t the same.” Kendra sighed, as she looked out of the passenger side window. “He was smart. And he had ambition. And I knew he liked to sell a bag or two on the side to get money every now and then, but I didn’t know that he wanted his own empire, too.
