JET STREAM MAPS: WHAT YOU DON’T SEE IS WHAT YOU GET

Picture yourself standing near a stream or river looking down into the water. Now imagine all of the pebbles and rocks you see in the water at the bottom of the stream bed as towns and buildings. In many ways, the atmosphere moves just like the water in a stream. The water flows around the rocks and stream bed, carrying items along in the water. Maybe a large leaf will float by. Maybe a log will spin through after that! In the atmosphere, storms, cyclones, and fronts are like the leaves and logs, drifting by on currents in the air. The air and atmosphere high above the ground moves weather along on river-like currents of air known as the jet stream. To forecast the weather, meteorologists must know where these currents are, how fast they are moving, and how they will change.

FUN FACT

Types of Jet Streams

Many different fast-moving currents of air can be called the jet stream. Two main types of jet streams that form over the United States are the polar jet stream and the subtropical jet stream. The polar jet often brings cold, arctic air from the area near the North Pole, while the subtropical jet carries warm, humid air from the south.
