Expanded Form

Expanded form is a way of writing a number as a sum of its units, tens, hundreds, and other groups represented by digits in the base-ten system. In other words, it’s a way of writing a number as an expression that tells you how many ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, or any other place value are in that number.

For example, if you wanted to write the number 482 in expanded form, you would take a look at the different digits and get your information from there. The number 482 has a 2 in the units place, so it has two individual units. It has an 8 in the tens place, so it must have eight groups of ten, which is a total of eighty units. It has a 4 as the hundreds digit, which means it has four groups of 100, which is a total of 400 units. So the number 482 is actually 400 + 80 + 2.

That’s all expanded form is. It’s mostly used as a way of helping you understand what the place values mean. You might be asked to prove you can write numbers in expanded form on a quiz or test, but you probably won’t use it very much apart from that.
