3.9 Facts/values

Women can feed infants through lactation.'Ien days from conception, it is still not finally determined whether a fetus will go on to divide into twins. Cocoa bought at market price does not guarantee a living wage to growers.

These are all facts. None are beyond dispute, but all are generally accepted by those who are experts in the given subject areas. Many people, however, believe that facts such as these also have a normative content: that is to say, they tell us something about the way things ought to be. In somewhat simplified terms, there are those who think that because women can feed infants through lactation, they ought to be the primary caregivers of children; that because the identity of any child or children that would be horn from the embryo at 10 days remains undetermined, there would be nothing wrong with aborting it; or that we should buy cocoa at above market price if that guarantees a decent income to growers. In each case a link is being made between facts and values.
