Gary Snyder was deeply influenced by the Taoists and Zen Buddhists. He studied Buddhism for many years in Japan, and later founded a Zen meditation community in the Sierra foothills. In the 1960s, long before the environment became a mainstream concern, Snyder was attempting to awaken people to the interdependence of all life and the intrinsic value of wilderness. He wrote:
