Now that we’ve given you an argument for writing out your speech, let me reinforce what’s been said about rehearsing. Don’t polish it up too much. When you are too rehearsed, too canned and too perfect, people can’t relate to you. Allow yourself to be real. Real people say “um” every now and again. ( Just not so much that it’s distracting.) Real people stumble over an idea on occasion. It makes you human to the audience. The goal is not to have them put you on a pedestal – it’s to have them relate to you. We’ll see more on rehearsing your presentation later in this section with Doug Stevenson and Victoria Labalme.
Part of the reason Joe Calloway is loved by the executives and bureaus who book him is because he’s real. He takes notes on the stage with him because he’s adding content right up until the moment he goes on. Joe’s formula allows him to plug in relevant information until the 11th hour. And if you asked him, he’d probably say that he doesn’t always have a “formula.” But when you’ve been speaking for 25 years, the rules are different for you.
