Fleetwood beach on a busy summer’s day, 1910.

Folkestone

A solitary gentleman looks out over Folkestone Harbour in 1908. Beyond him two steamers lie tied up at the quayside. A popular ferry port for the crossing to France since mid-Victorian times, Folkestone started to develop as a seaside resort when the railway was opened in the 1840s.

Folkestone from the Leas, 1907. On the edge of the beach, tucked hard in against the cliffs, an amazing wooden helter-skelter – predecessor of the roller-coaster – can be seen just below the pier. It must have been a white-knuckle ride when the tide was high. The pier, long since demolished, was completed in 1888.
