Chapter 13 - Wednesday July 6th 2033
Simon parked and looked up at the shabby sign that read Plaid Cymru Advice Centre. The shop looked dilapidated, flaking green paint and dirty windows. Aaron Green - Assembly Member South West Wales, said the paper stuck to the window. A limp net curtain shielded the inside from view. Simon opened the door and went in. A young woman wedged behind a small desk was on the phone. She gestured to a chair piled with election posters. Simon moved the posters and sat down. It had been Zoe's idea to contact Aaron Green. Sitting in the cramped office, Simon was already regretting it.
"He's a campaigner," she'd said. "If anyone can get the case reopened he can."
"Diolch," said the woman. "Hwyl." She replaced the receiver. "You Mr Reece? That was Aaron on the phone. He's in the car, on the way back from Cardiff and will be about ten minutes. Would you like a coffee while you wait?" She boiled a kettle, perched on a wobbly table, handed Simon a mug of brown sludge and told him her life story.
The door opened. "Mr Reece? Aaron Green. Sorry I'm late; committee meeting. Couldn't get away." The assembly member was wearing a tailored business suit. He looked about forty and was overweight but radiated energy.
Simon followed Green through to another office, a well-ordered inner sanctum. The desk was clear except for a laptop and a phone. A framed cartoon of Max Roberts in a fascist uniform hung on a wall. Someone had added a Hitler moustache using a red felt pen. Simon smiled.
"Childish humour. It helps," said Green and shrugged. "My secretary said something about a police matter where you need help."
Simon explained the circumstances of his parents' death and what he and Gary had discovered.
Aaron Green removed the top from a green fountain pen and made notes, asking questions about the coat and who had found it, showing considerable interest. "It occurs to me that the new government database could solve a lot of old crimes. It's an interesting idea. As you probably know, I've been opposed to government's policy. I'm not popular with the NPP. They have men watching me."
He replaced the top on his pen. "Thank you for bringing this to me. I believe it's something positive to campaign for. Not just your case, although I understand how important it is for you, but for other miscarriages of justice. I know the chief constable. He's a decent man." Green paused considering his next comment. "Take care Mr Reece. These are dangerous times."
They shook hands.
Returning to the car, Simon noticed a black Vauxhall car with two men in it. The car followed him out of Carmarthen. When Simon turned left onto the main road the car was still behind him. He pulled into a lay-by and waited. His pursuers drove slowly past. Simon grabbed a petrol receipt and scribbled the car's registration number on the back.
"What did he say?" asked Zoe when he got back to Coed Mawr.
