MILA

I hated how weak Tate made me. His lips against mine had my body on fire. I looked into his eyes and knew he wasn’t asking about the trip but telling me. Getting away wouldn’t be terrible, so I smiled at his advances. Honestly, it was the first time I smiled since the accident. Tate seemed pleased with my smile because he pulled me closer.

“I made reservations for a four-day, three-night stay. Go ahead and pack so we can hit the road.”

“You don’t want to sleep first? You worked all day.”

Tate held my gaze and bobbed his head.

“Yeah. We can leave first thing in the morning.”

He kissed my lips and went upstairs.

As I finished dinner, my mind returned to the accident a few days ago. Was I really ready to be inside a car? I didn’t think so, but I also didn’t want to be stuck in the house for the rest of my life either.

Sighing, I focused my energy on stirring the chicken fried rice in front of me.

I had to be grateful that I was still here. Once, I was in an accident that could have claimed my life, but I was still here. The other day, the recklessness of the person not paying attention sent me back in time two years. By God’s grace, the accident had been a minor one. With that in mind, I stood up straighter and told myself that I was ready for anything.

Before placing them on the dining room table, I plated our dinner with a smile.

“Come on, Tate. Dinner is ready!” I yelled up the stairs.

“Coming!”

I chuckled and went to the refrigerator to grab our drinks.

While I waited for Tate, my mind involuntarily went to the other driver of the car that hit ours, saying that someone had jumped into his lane, pushing his vehicle into the Uber driver. People really didn’t know how to drive. It was like their driver’s license came from a Cracker Jack box. My train of thought was interrupted by Tate plopping down into his seat.

I looked up at him, and his eyes were already on me, causing me to blush and roll my eyes. He chuckled and grabbed my hand before blessing the food. I watched as Tate took his first bite. It always made me laugh how I had been cooking for my husband for many years, but he ate like it was his first time tasting the food.

Getting my fill of watching him, I took a bite out of my own food.

“You put your whole foot in this, baby,” Tate said after moaning his appreciation.

It would seem random to him, but the question had been on my mind since this morning.

“How long is Xavianna going to be a problem in our marriage?” I asked, but I was not expecting Tate to start choking. I jumped up from my seat to pat his back. I instantly felt like shit.

I had questions that needed answers, but I was not trying to kill my husband in the process.
