For many people, abandoning the crowd is so unpleasant that they will follow it wherever it goes, even if it is headed straight to hell. Sometimes all it takes is for someone with authority to do something and the herd will follow. Those who are unable to leave the herd become accomplices to evil. The philosopher Edmund Burke had this to say about the risks of becoming a passive member of the herd: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

How is it that every once in a while someone appears who manages to leave the herd and point out its flaws? How is it possible that some people stop to help when they see a car accident while others just drive by? Leaving the herd is one manifestation of the ability that Zimbardo calls heroism.

During the Stanford prison experiment, a hero emerged from amongst Zimbardo’s colleagues. It was she who stepped out from the crowd when the experiment got out of hand and forced Zimbardo to stop it. This woman would later go on to become Zimbardo's wife, by the way.

In Abu Ghraib, a young soldier became a hero; despite the risks, he managed to break away from the herd and reported what was going on in the prison.

At our meeting, Zimbardo explained to us that everyone can train their heroism; you can gradually build it up. His research has shown that heroes aren’t born: they are made over time.70
