When his cousin arrived at Pemberley later that day, he gave him the news.

Perhaps I should have consulted you first,” said Darcy.

“Darcy, you are her brother. I know I am her guardian, but if you have decided this is best and it is what Georgiana wants, I would not disagree with you.”

“It is not what I want,” mused Darcy as he poured them both a drink. “But for the time being this is not where Georgiana wants to be, and I want her to be happy. In truth I worry what she might do when she is under the care of Aunt Clara.”

The colonel laughed, accepting some ale. “Darcy, you cannot control everything. Your aunt loves Georgiana and she seems to understand her.”

Darcy wondered whether to mention his concerns about what Georgiana had said about her time in Cumbria, but then decided against it. She hadn’t said anything definite and he did not want them to speculate about the cause of her unhappiness.

The colonel stretched out his legs. “How are the renovations?”

“Mr. Peters is directing everything. Little progress has been made so far. They are still clearing up and we have months of work. Do you want to see them?”

His cousin didn’t answer and sat twiddling the pitcher in his hands.

“Is something wrong?” asked Darcy.

The colonel suddenly looked up at him. “I am sorry, Darcy. I am interested in what is happening, of course I am, but I called today to speak to you.”

Darcy leaned forward in his seat. “Have you been recalled to your regiment?”

“I have,” said the Colonel, “but that is not why I am here. I came to give you an invitation to dine at Matlock Hall.”

Darcy was surprised. He was not in the habit of going to his uncle’s home. They were not close. “I do not mean to appear rude. Is there a reason for it?”

His cousin flushed. “When I left here, it was not to return home. I went to see Lord Galsworthy.”

Darcy sat upright “And…”

“He agreed that I could speak to his daughter.”

Darcy was stunned. “Cousin, I am delighted for you. And have you done so?”

The colonel nodded. “I have, Darcy, and she has accepted. That is what the dinner is for is to celebrate our engagement.”

Darcy got up and clapped his cousin on the back. “I am delighted for you.”

“It is such a shock, Darcy. I thought it would never happen,” admitted his cousin. “Your turn will be next, Darcy.”

Darcy grimaced. “One wedding in the family will be enough, Fitzwilliam.”

“I thought perhaps…” said his cousin.

Darcy cut across him. “Finish your drink, cousin. I want your opinion on work that I have planned for the stables.”

Darcy was on his feet. He did not want to think about marriage. His cousin had no idea he’d proposed marriage to Miss Bennet and been rebuffed. The pain of her rejection was yet to leave him.
