Brandon gritted his teeth as he performed the last leg exercise of the day. The training never got any easier, and the weights he added to his bar seemed to be as heavy as the first day he’d started. But his muscles had grown thick and strong, reducing the sharpness of the pain.

With a groan, he dropped the weights onto the floor of the training room. Sweat soaked his shirt, and his muscles ached, but he couldn’t deny the powerful feeling rushing through his body. The training also eased the knot in his belly. After last night at the ball, he needed to vent his frustration.

Matthew plonked himself down on the wooden bench and handed him a towel. “It took me a lot of effort to convince Lady Robinson to have a meeting with you, and now she barely talks to me. What are we supposed to do?”

Brandon wiped the sweat from his forehead. “I’ll admit I didn’t handle the situation with tact, but I’m not going to debase myself, Matthew, no matter what. And Lady Robinson disparaged Emily. I couldn’t remain silent.” Besides, after receiving a kiss from Emily, he had no intention of pursuing any other woman. She’d bewitched him with that kiss. Diablo had his sympathy.

Matthew sipped from his flask of water. “You’re overreacting. It’s only a fumble, and the lady is very attractive.”

Not to him. He took a sip too. “Only a fumble? If you’re so dismissive of the importance of sharing your body with someone, why don’t you accept the lady’s offer and do it then?”

“Because she wants you.” A note of resentment crept into Matthew’s voice. “I’m not titled. My father was an engine driver, and my mother worked on a farm. I’m not worth her time, I guess. To her, we are too different, on the opposing sides of society.”

“Ridiculous.” He rubbed his sore legs. “I think we should let her calm down for a day or two before asking for a new meeting, and to hell with being too different and on the opposing sides of society.”

Matthew huffed. “All she wants is an assignation. A tryst. Would calling it a French rendezvous make it sound more polite?”

“No.”

Matthew lowered his eyebrows as if he had an epiphany. “Perhaps Cowley can find something about her, a secret she’s ashamed of. If she goes around having fumbles with all the men she fancies, she must have secrets.”

“I’m not going to blackmail her.”

“But she’s blackmailing you. She wants you to tup her in exchange for doing something that’s supposed to be her job. She is despicable. Not to mention,” Matthew hurried to add when Brandon opened his mouth, “that she behaved beastly towards Emily. She’s no angel.”

“I agree, but I won’t blackmail her. I will not stoop that low. And just because she behaves horribly, it doesn’t mean I have to do the same. Hell, if we reciprocated every despicable act with another despicable act, there’d only be twelve people left in London.”

Matthew folded his arms over his chest.
