It wasn’t real. She had to remind herself of that, but when he spoke those words, when his voice was deep and rich and full, when he looked at her like that—she wished it were real. She wished all of it were real.

A pain like she had never felt before unraveled in her stomach. She had been so focused on proving the letter writer wrong she hadn’t considered how she would feel in this. The emotions it would invoke, the wants she didn’t know she had. The desire she couldn’t have imagined.

She swallowed, feeling the enormity of what was happening fall around her like a suffocating cloak. “You…do?” She struggled to keep her voice steady, but she couldn’t let him know how much he affected her just then. He would think she was weak, letting herself dream of things that would never happen.

This was an arrangement, and she had to remember that.

“I do.” His voice was fuller now, a hint of playfulness returning to it. “Do you know what I think about?”

She thought she said no, but then he came up on his elbow, released her hand to lean over her, and she forgot the rudiments of speech. He was so big, his shoulders blocking out the stars above, and a rush of sheer anticipation coursed through her.

She wanted him to touch her. The need was sudden and penetrating, and she marveled at its swiftness. She’d never felt anything like it before, and surely that was a sign her experiment was working.

As soon as the thought entered her mind though, she pushed it away.

She didn’t want to think of this as an experiment. She wanted to believe that Ransom was here of his own free will, that he wanted her, that he truly desired her. It was a farce, and she knew that, but just this once she wanted to believe.

He reached up with one hand and traced the line of her jaw with a single finger, heat burning through her at his touch. “I think about…” His voice trailed off as his finger lazily made its way to her chin and down along the sensitive curve of her neck, along her collarbone. And then it stopped, and his eyes met hers. “I think about what you look like behind those spectacles.”

Before she could understand what he had said, he reached up and tugged her spectacles from her face, his grin like that of a curious child, but as soon as they came free, the grin vanished. The moment froze in time, him leaning above her, her spectacles in his hand, her arms reaching up, grasping his shoulders in a nervous reaction to stop him from taking her lenses.

And the look on his face.

God, the look on his face cut right through her.

Disbelief. Shock. Confusion.

She wanted more than anything to know what he was thinking. What he saw when he looked at her without the shield of her spectacles. Could he even see her in the dark?

He reached out that single finger again, but this time he touched her cheek, traced a path to her temple.
