At every turn it seemed Daisy surprised him. He had not expected her to agree to swim, nor to run across the lawn wearing his shirt. She had her parasol up to try to hide herself, but he hoped that no one was looking. A streak of jealousy ran through him at the thought of anyone else seeing her body like that. It was ridiculous, of course. He was surely the latest in a long line of lovers who had seen her body, who had made love to her, who had shared her bed. And he would not be the last. Jealousy would only hurt him.

And yet it warred in his veins with the passion he felt for her as he gave her time to get safely into the dower house, before walking over there himself. Better they not be seen together in states of undress. Better for her reputation. Better for his chances of more architectural work

He knew he should not follow her. He should have made an excuse, gone back to work. The only reason he had sought her out was to tell her he was leaving the dower house – and now he was returning to it in the middle of the day, a slave to his desires.

But he could not ignore the blood rushing through his body or the roaring of desire in his belly. He wanted her, and she wanted him, and although he knew this could not last, he was determined to enjoy it while it did.

Tomorrow he would move into the main house – and then, surely, all of this would be over.

The sombre thought was hard to shake off, until he entered the dower house – very glad that Daisy’s maid was out – and took the stairs two at a time, before knocking on Daisy’s door.

The sight of her wrapped in a towel, her hair unpinned and flowing down her back, her shoulders bare and her skin rosy, was enough to wash any misery he had been feeling away.

There was no need for any more words now. He shut the door behind him and pulled her closer, dislodging the towel so that their bare torsos were pressed together. He had hurriedly pulled on his trousers over his wet underclothes, and as they moved towards the bed, he struggled to remove them.

She lay on the bed, a goddess in the afternoon sunlight that streamed through the windows, and giggled as his clothes stuck to his wet skin.

He had not had the additional moments she had to remove his clothes in private.

When he eventually wore nothing, he joined her on the bed, his lips finding hers as his hands rested on her hips, pulling her closer, tighter.

Was this to be the last time they were together like this?

He paused their kiss to look at her face, to memorise the way the blush tinged her cheeks, and her dark hair lay across the pillow.

"Julian?" she said, as though it was a question.

"You’re beautiful," he told her, and the blush deepened.
