It shouldnât have been any surprise whatsoever that they made the final, given Reb had made herself head judge. Not that anyone would protest given theyâd won the biggest cheers of the night. Kris had ended up in yet another argument with her other bandmates when they didnât make the cut and had to store her kit in the office overnight because she no longer had access to a van.
Reb helped her transport it back the following morning and on Monday, Sophie arrived at Krisâs flat to find it set up opposite the sofa, where most people would have a television. Sheâd entered quietly confident that now Kris was free of the band she hated it would correct her mood, but that had turned out to be a major error of judgement. All had started well, but her heart quickly plummeted into her stomach when a text message sunk Kris into a greater pit of misery, and the barriers fell firmly back into place.
Half an hour later as they stopped for a break, Sophie had to probe. âAre you okay? Has something happened?â
âYeah, donât worry about it. Just a student cancelling. Same shit different day.â Kris managed a quick smile and handed over a bottle of beer before settling in on her stool again. âLetâs get this over with.â
Over with? Sophie tried not to let slip how hurt she was by Krisâs dismissive comment. Sheâd seemed into this the other night, as if she were enjoying it too. âCan we just relax? This is meant to be a bit of fun.â Even as she said it, she knew Kris wasnât in the mood. The little eye roll was enough for her to snap. âWhat happened to you? Can I have back the woman I met three years ago? Or the one who was so nice to me on Thursday night?â
Sheâd kept an even tone, but it hadnât helped. Kris held up her drumsticks, squeezing them tight, and then threw them at the sofa. âWhat happened to me, are you serious? I spent so long out on the road that my girlfriend left me, and now Iâm stuck playing with lousy amateurs.â
âLousy amateurs?â The first bit she could sympathise with, but Kris needed a serious attitude adjustment if she thought she could get away with calling anyone a lousy amateur. âRemove your head from your ass. Maybe youâd be a bit happier if you werenât being such a fucking bitch all the time. Take some responsibility, instead of blaming everyone else.â Sophie rested her guitar against the wall and swigged on her beer bottle, trying to calm her rising anger.
âOh, like you are?â Kris folded her arms as she stood up again, then kicked at the rug under her kit. âWorking in your friendâs bar at thirty-three and playing your sad little YouTube gigs to all of five people. Sure, Iâll take advice from you.â
Sophie slammed the beer down on a side table and it foamed up the neck. âExcuse me? I enjoy working with Reb, itâs a choice.
