Back in Tucson, Joshua stopped at a little grocery store that had a phone booth outside. He looked up Dr. Murray Robertson, didn’t find him in the residential listings, and looked him up in the business pages. He telephoned, but there was no answer. Damn, he thought. In Brooklyn the doctors all practiced out of their homes. But not here. Their home phones are unlisted. Have to wait till tomorrow.

The disappointment brought him down from his high. He drove back home thinking about tomorrow. Get to the doctor’s office early tomorrow morning, have him examine Ignacio, testify for five minutes in court, and Ignacio will be a free man.

When he got home, no one was there. It was almost one-thirty. He saw Hanna and Magdalena walking across the cotton field toward him and figured that they must have waited to come home until they saw the dust from his car. Where was Adam? He got back into the car and waved at the girls. He drove to the reservoir and there were a few Indian boys playing with frogs. He drove anxiously back to the house. He saw Adam walking home on Indian Agency Road. He parked in front of the house.

“Hi, Adam. Why are you late? I told you to be right on time for the next few days.”

“I know, Dad, but I was at Sunday school. I couldn’t leave till Jimmy’s mom picked us up.” He held up a book.

“What’s this?”

“It’s the Jesus Coloring Book, I got it at church. Isn’t it neat?” He was very excited and handed the book to his father.

The girls came across the ditch and joined them.

“What’s that?” Hanna asked.

“It’s the Jesus Coloring Book Adam got at Sunday school with Jimmy,” Joshua said.

“Sunday school?” she said. She turned to her brother. “Where’d you go?”

“First Southern Baptist Church. It was neat. We watched a movie about how our missionaries are converting these natives in Africa—they run around naked and drink cow blood and milk—and then we got cake and candy, and then they handed out these coloring books and we got to color for a whole hour. See, Dad?” Adam took the book from his father and thumbed the pages. “See here, this is Jesus feeding lambs, and this is him at the Sermon on the Mount. Did you know that the Jews could have saved him, but they chose a thief instead? His name was Barber or Barbus or something.”

“Well, Adam, you’re a real fountain of information today. And after just one day at Sunday school. My, my, I wonder how you’d be after a few more weeks.”

The sarcasm was lost on Adam, but Hanna began giggling.

“Yeah, Dad,” he gushed, “I can win a whole bag of candy if I color this one the best.” He flipped a few pages to Jesus on the cross.

“Well, I think that maybe it’s time to see if there’s a Hebrew school in Tucson. You’re so interested in religion, it might as well be your own.”

“Aw, Dad! I’m just interested in the bag of candy,” Adam groaned.
