Chapter Fifty
The White House, Washington, DC
A knock. Sasha popped her head in, her hand remaining on the open door.
âYou need to listen to something,â she said.
She traversed the Oval Office and entered Whitneyâs study, not asking for permission nor waiting for Whitney to follow her. Whitney frowned at the unusual lack of protocol but followed her chief of staff just the same.
Sasha turned on the radio.
âItâs always been a dream of mine,â said a voice through the radioâs speakers.
Whitney tensed.
âWhy did it take you so long to run?â asked the talk-show host for Patriot News, his tone more subdued than usual. It was one of Cole Brennanâs first broadcasts since his sonâs death.
âLife had other plans for me, I guess.â
She envisioned the shrug and the boyish grin of Coleâs guest. A grin she knew well.
âMy daddy sold cars,â the guest continued, âand I was expected to follow in his footsteps.â
âI read about that in the Washington Times,â Cole said. âThe only legitimate paper in Washington, by the way. Then what happened?â
âI realized I wanted more out of life.â
âYou were a state legislator in Missouri,â said Cole. âWhat made you run for Congress?â
âWhen I learned that Steven Barrettâs death wasnât an accident,â said the voice, tinged with anger, âand that the FBI covered it up, I had to do something. Congressman Barrett was a Missouri son. Born and raised. He represented our district and state faithfully for many years, and he deserved better than the investigation the federal government conducted for him.â
âThose are strong accusations, my friend,â Cole said. âAny proof?â
âNot yet, but Iâll get it. How the FBI handled his murder was a travesty of justice and an injustice for the congressmanâs family. I wonât rest until they receive the justice they deserve.â
âDonât you find it ironic,â Cole said, âthat you and our president both come from the same district and were elected to the House because of a special election?â
A pause. Whitney held her breath, wondering if the guest would disclose their shared history.
âHer opportunity arose because of the suspicious death of Congressman Barrett,â the guest responded. âI was elected after the governor appointed the congressman serving at the time to the presidentâs vacant seat in the Senate. Thereâs a difference.â
âAre you implying,â Cole said, his voice rising incredulously, âthat the president of the United States was involved in Barrettâs death?â
Another pause. âI didnât say that.â
Sure you didnât.
âI know something about insinuation,â Cole said, âand that sure sounded like it to me.â
âAll Iâm saying is that itâs a curious coincidence.â
âIf you say so. What are your plans now that youâre in Congress?â
âThereâs plenty we need to do to take the country back, Cole. Decrease regulations, reduce the deficit, and create manufacturing jobs, to name a few.â
âCouldnât agree more. Well, thatâs all the time we have today. Before I go, I want to thank all of you for your phone calls, letters, and emails about my son CJ. They mean a lot to Ashley and me. Now, Iâm going to say something else some of you donât want to hear, but you need to.
