RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

As a parent, you have to decide where to draw the line between not helping your child enough and helping them too much. For sure you don’t want to just turn your kids loose on the world and let them live like feral cats, but most parents don’t do that. In fact, in today’s society most parents tend toward snowplowing. To avoid this tendency, give your children as much responsibility as they are capable of handling, while keeping the following suggestions in mind.

First, make sure the tasks you’re giving your kids are age appropriate. If you entrust your four-year-old with the laundry, the best-case scenario is that no laundry will get done. (I don’t even want to think about the worst-case scenario.)

Think in terms of what your child is capable of doing, and that will vary depending on their developmental age, maturity, and judgment. Here’s a list of suggestions by age to get you started.
